Thank you for a wonderful visit, this site is very helpful and i am sure it has helped a lot of caregivers, i care for my son Lee who was in a car accident 1996, i try to be positive but i still grieve for the old Lee, i do not cry so much because it does not help and will never help, I make the best of the situation and i try to offer support to other caregivers like myself, i feel Lee is happy in his own way, just to see him smile is better than winning the lottery, once again thank you for the good work you all do, god bless Sylvie UK

Hi.My name is Elizabeth Stevens and I suffered a brain injury on March 24,2002.Although the road has been very difficult I am a typical 15 yrs old girl.I have completely recovered from my accident which included a 3 week coma and 2 month hospital stay. All of my physical disabilities have been conquered and someone who just meets me on the street would never guess.Reading all of the stories on this site have really helped since i've been feeling isolated lately.Although now I know others have gone through everything I have it doesn't really help because i haven't come across anyon who has completely recovered.I feel so isolated and would love to here from someone that can help. Thanks a bunch-Elizabeth

My fiance was injured at her workplace and had a resperatory arrest which led to acute renal failure and, due to lack of oxygen, a brain injury. What makes this so hard for her is that she was(is) a critical care nurse in ICU. She was injured in Jan. of 2002 and has improved greatly since then. She still has short term memory loss, depression, and uncontrollable bouts of rage. It is this rage that I am now losing my patience with. I tolerated all the emotional peaks and valleys, the outbursts of hateful remarks that were directed not only to myself but to my friends and family, the accusations that I tried to kill her; that I was stealing her money; that I stole her life; that she has nothing to live for; that I don't care nor love her; etc., for as long as I could but recently I have been lashing back at her verbally, in a rage, and am on the verge of calling it quits and moving on. It was, and still is, a new and foreign territory for me...and so much more for her. I know that she is not like she was, before this happened. I know what caused it and what it has done. What I needed to know is that what I am going through has been dealt with by other people and how it is dealt with. I know she has a brain injury but I also felt that, with her continued improvement, she also should have some degree of control over her bitterness. She has called my friends, people that I have known for over 25 years, and told them that I was beating her and stealing her money. Of course, this created some resentment towards her from them, which I must attribute to their lack of knowledge to the scope and depth of her injury. Mine, also, I'm afraid to admit. For I have taken it personally and yelled at her and threatened to leave, that I was fed up with her behavior and didn't deserve all the abuse being flung my way, after all that I had done for her. But upon finding this site, it has been like being lost in a strange land for so long where noone speaks your language and the hills look the same and the homes look the same and you are so weary when, all of a sudden, you round a corner and there are all your friends and family and pets and homes and hills that you do know and the relief you feel... well, it feels pretty good. Reading some of the comments left by these good people has helped. I know now that I do need to alter my thinking, that I'm not the only one that has, and still am, experiencing these emotions. Like Emily Dickinson once said,"Hope is a thing with feathers." I will not be without feathers.

My Husband, Sean & I live in St. George, Utah with our Children Mojave 7 yrs and Maggie 8 yrs. Sean was in a motorcycle accident on Feb 17, 2002 (he was not wearing a helmit) He was life flighted to Las Vegas with a closed head TBI. He was in a coma for close to 2 months and in the hospital/care center for just over 3 months until he was released into my care. Sean has made good progress in his recovery, but we both feel very isolated from the world as we once knew it. We are searching for any information or help that would make this time easier.

I have experienced the death of my daughter Michelle due to severe brain injury. She died withing five months. The hospital gave up on her within two months. Said she would never be any better. On top of that the biggest issue was she was on Medicaid and the money ran out for her hospitalization. I was told that she was ok and ready to go home. I would be her caretaker. In ten days Michelle passed away. I beg everyone to give these people a chance so they and their families never have to go through what I did and still am....

Hello, My niece is in a vegetative state and I found your page while looking for information on appropriate care for her. While reading a story by Michelle's mom I saw the sentence "We have been through the grinding teeth phase - the neuro sweats - the chewing - the look of being alive but semi dead." My neice did a lot of grinding teeth, I think she still does - but I am in a different state and haven't seen her for over a month. Is this common? are there other things like this that are common? The doctor at the long term care facility want to put her on a drug to stimilate brain activity. Do you have any experience with this? We are fearful of more drug allergies or adverse reactions or just interfering with her brain's own ability to heal. If anyone has any words for us, that would be nice. I can pass this on to my sister and brother in law who stay with her most of the time. My sister doesn't have ready access to a computer at this time. Thank You, Sharon

Our son,Josh, suffered a TBI on 6/29/02. He has diffuse axonal injury. He spent a month in the main hospital and 7 weeks in the rehab hospital. He came home on 9/18/02,a month ago. He was in a complete coma for 10 days. He is awake and at times seems to understand things. He does not speak yet, he can not walk or support his body. We are doing all personal, physical care at home. A home health agency has been working with him but will be cutting back on therapy (and I assume eventually stopping)if he doesn't show enough improvement. He is 23 years old without insurance-he now has Medicaid approval. We are getting very stressed out. As others on this site have said, no one understands the need for help and care. People don't understand the continuous drain on emotions and physical energy (not to mention the financial burden). I know no one can say how much a person will recover, but I wish there were facilities to do basic care so we could work with our son on therapy-type needs. By the time we do everything else we can't manage the PT and OT type of care. Please let us know of any contacts/care avenues we may have missed.

My family had a single vehicle accident last May 1999 which left my now 13 year old daughter in a persistent vegetative state. She is on a trache and breathes humidified air and is fed through a g-tube. My wife and I are the primary caregivers and we are proud to say that she is very healthy and has no bedsores. We believe she is aware but her motor skills are gravely affected. We would give simple commands like to move her fingers or toes and she does them but very faintly. We don't know where to go to provide her intensive rehab or therapy to move her to a higher level. We would appreciate it a lot if you will be able to provide us with information. Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy okay? Thanks a lot.

My husband, Kevin, was a pedestrian hit by a truck on 08/25/00. Kevin was in a coma for 22 days. He is now trying to relearn to walk and hold his balance, has much confusion and memory problems. Insurance won't pay for anymore rehab. I know with more rehab he will be able to walk again, helping him to be more independant. He is a very happy person and I don't want him to become depressed or discouraged. Are there any place out there that will help with more rehab? We live in Tampa, Florida

My 18 year old son had a car accident on July 27th,2002. He has been Dx. with a TBI. He was in a coma for 3 weeks, then transported to another hospital for two more weeks. This has been a very difficult time for my whole family, but I really think it has hit me the hardest. I am the main care giver for my child of course, but sometimes I feel that I don't have the strength to go on. I sometimes feel that maybe my son would of been better left to go with God. When they found him, they told me that he was dead and they had to bring him back by shocking him. (I don't really feel that they needed to tell me that part) I get to feeling guilty that I had ever felt this feeling and when I told a close friend of my feelings, she thought I was terrible for even thinking it. My son is up walking and talking now. His voice is still not what it used to be. He has alot of pain and definately is not the same person that he was before the accident. He was in a day rehab. program until today. My insurance company has determined that he is no longer in need of this therapy. My son tends to agree due to the fact that he doesn't think that there is anything wrong with him except he knows that he hurts. His neck, shoulder, back hurts and occasionally he complains that "his heart hurts." His doctors and therapist aggree that he needs much more therapy and isn't close to being well, but can't do anything d/t the insurance company. We are now at a stand still. I hurt so much for my son, and I also fell that I am going crazy at times. I never sleep much now (and neither does he ) I don't feel that I am as productive at work and I usually sit up all night just thinking about how different my son is. I have 4 other childern that I am trying very hard to keep things as normal as possible for, but that is also very difficult. I don't know where to turn for help and my biggest problem is that everyone seems to think that James is "all better". His physical injury's are not real ovious. It is so hard to deal with people that don't understand my sons injury. I would love to be able to talk to other people that are going through or have gone through the same thing that I am, but going to support groups are not possible for me d/t the fact that the car my son was driving was mine and I no longer have a car. My insurance company has dropped me and I don't have the money to put down on another used car. I am kind of trapped at this time. The rehab. program had a van that they picked my son up in so I didn't have to worry about getting him to that. They are now telling me that James will need to at least go to an out pt. program for this therapy 3 times a week since the insurance company won't pay for his therapy there any longer. What they don't seem to understand is that I just can;t come up with 500.00 to put down on another car and my community support sysytem has failed me since they see James at home and think he is better, they think I no longer need help. People just don't understand. I am hoping that alot of folks come to this site and educate themselves about TBI. It is such a devastating injury, especially since the injury can't be oviously seen. This is a wonderful site for information on brain injury and I appreciate the time that the founders of this site have taken to put it together. Barbara Bayne Douglasville, Ga.

My prayers are with each and everyone of you. As a home health nurse I know the pain and stress that you go through. I worked with Ila's daughter Debbie and I saw what Ila had to deal with. Most of her headaches came from our great and wonderful system. Thank you for all the work that you are doing. Love to you all and may God Blees you.

My daughter, Nicole, 20, was a passenger in a car accident this past summer, July 12, 2001 and received a TBI. She was in a coma for 6 wks. in the hospital, moved to a nursing home for 4 wks and back to the hospital for inpatient rehab. She came home the very end of Sept. 2001. She has improved since that fateful day but her short term memory is very, very bad, she is very impulsive, frustrated, uninhibited in everything she says (cusses alot), she is very engrossed with past memories of her life before her TBI which was nothing to remember using drugs, hanging out, not doing anything with her life. Now, she has no friends, she is at home with family almost 24/7. I am very frustrated and feel like I'm ready to go nuts, I have taken her to every possible resource around our area, we've been to voc rehab - they say to wait a year she is not ready yet, we've tried to volunteer at an animal shelter - but her fatigue is such that we can't commit to 6 months, we've seen a neuro-psyc. who has given us some good resources but she feels Nicole needs more intensive treatment in a day program where she would go daily away from home, the only one there is is not covered by medicaid. There seem to be so many people with brain injuries and there are no real good resources for them. I feel like my daughter is falling through the cracks and I don't know how to help her. I worry that she will be living at home with us forever and will miss out on having her own life, with husband, home & children. I do believe she is very capable of this a ways down the road but feel we need something in between. I just feel like I'm at my wits end, it is really hard to have a life of your own, even use the bathroom without my name being called. I am grateful to God for letting her live and don't mean to complain & vent, I just don't know how to handle things anymore. Thanks for listening.

My family was in a car accident February 22, 1985. My then 6 year old daughter suffered a severe traumatic brain injury. She is now 22. She is considered by the medical community as non-verbal (but she's pretty good at letting me know what she wants and especially what she doesn't want). I am the primary care-giver. There is so much more information available now than 17 years ago and still not nearly enough. Georgia has so far to go. Our schools are the pits and just when I thought it could be no worse than special ed we entered into the adult world of "disabilities" where non-verbal still equates to unintelligent. My hats off to you folks for this positive site. Please let me know how I can help. Beverly Lord (Donna's mom)

My life changed six months ago. My boyfriend of three years fell skateboarding. He was 28, now 29. I am 27. Feeling 50. We are truley blessed by God and many wonderful people. I have put my life on hold, preety much, to take care of him. I'm told that I am doing it well, but I usually feel like a fledgling: Just flapping my wings to stay in the air. Mainly, I want to hear/have stories and support from others whom might relate. In reciprocation, of course. Be well!

please help, searching for a family friend whose mother is at a stage 2-rancho coma (four weeks out). having trouble with the insurance who is pressuring to find a facility. she can not find a facility much less one that will do therapy (coma stimulation therapy). she is scared that the hospital will kick her out if the insurance stops paying and the insurance says that they will only pay for two weeks at a skilled nursing facility after leaving the hospital. needless to say she is a basket case. we are also looking for national grants or university studies that she could possibly get her mom in. any direction would be greatly appreciated. thanks, t. quintin

I had Encephalitis at 2 1/2 years of age and I am now 76. My parents did not have any help of any support group or anyone to turn to who could explain more about an awareness of Encephalitis and residual effects. I am estranged from my brother and would like very much to start a new relationship with him. I would need help to have someone explain to him that I have a doctor who is treating me and giving me medication for hypertension. I do have a great deal of anxiety and I have medication for that which helps and I am taking calcium which I need as I was not getting enough calcium. For relaxation I drink sleepy time tea and I do art therapy in several programs on my computer and doing art work in them. I use a digital camera and because of my IQ I am not eligible for a Service Coordinator as my IQ is too high. My parents believed the doctors when they told them I would not be able to learn things. With the things I do on the Computer areas in my brain which were not damaged are working to take over what was damaged and I am able to learn and have been told I am a very good advocate for myself.

On 12/26/01 while standing at work cutting hair (she's a barber) my sister (45 yrs. at that time) suddenly out of the blue grabbed her head and made the comment she had a headache like she's never had in her life ever. Just that quick. No warning. She suffered a Cerebullar Hemorrhage. She nearly died. I am interested in learning about brain injury so that I can help my sister. I live 2 1/2 hours away from her which makes it somewhat difficult. She is home in her apartment now. I wish there was a way to communicate with her by computer, but she doesn't have one so phone calls and post office mail will have to do. This web site is one of the most informative web sites I've seen since my journey began learning about brain injury. I have learned so much just by reading the information of the injury and also what to expect by reading the stories of others who are caregivers. And of course the information from those who have had the brain injury. I am truly thankful of the eagerness and generosity people are so willing to give to one another. I only hope that I can lend a helping to someone some day from what I learn about brain injury. Sincerely, Colleen Popp

I was in an iatrogenic coma and I was sent home with no therapy plan. I am trying to find out where do I go to get help for my praxis condition which seems to be related to uncontrollable hypoxia when I have an asthma attack now. One day I can do dishes and then after a hypoxic attack I can't even tell you how to do dishes. Does anyone have this too?

I have a son with a BI that sustained in 7/98. He is now 23 and we have run into some brick walls with VR and case managers. We will be looking at a structured living facility this week. There is a possibility that he could be moved there by the first week of February. This will be good for the whole family because the stress levels are reaching a max. I know all who will read this will understand. But, there is many mixed feelings in this situation. As I write this, I am feeling sad. I only hope that our difficulties and solutions to those difficulties will be of benefit to someone else.
Thanks for the space to write, Sharon.

Our daughter, at the age of eighteen, suffered a traumatic brain injury as the result of domestic violence. Her fiance, at the time, struck her several times along side the left side of her head; causing a veinal bleed. Two weeks later she collapsed from a massive blood clot, then suffered two major strokes. She underwent brain surgery to remove the clot, but the damage from the strokes remain. It has been one year post trauma and she is still suffering the effects of the brain injury. At the time of her injury she was four months pregnant. While in the hospital in re-hab she gave birth to a beautiful baby girl, who is perfect in every way. Where do we turn for advice and support when it comes to finding therapy and training for a young person with such injury? She has limited physical handicaps since she can walk. The Dr's prognosis was that she would be totally paralyzed on her right side. Her balance is off at times and she falls often. Her gait can be uneven especially when she tires. Since she is ambulatory without the use of a wheel chair or walker she is not viewed as physically handicapped. She has a visual field defeciet, which she can usually overcome, that does cause her some problem when she walks down the stairs. She has long term and short term memory loss and impulsivity. There-hab center she is at now is planning her discharge ina month stating she can be self suffecient for eight hours. The only way I could leave her alone for eight hours would be if I put a tracker on her to find her when I came home. When she is at home there is enough memory recall to be framiliar with her surroundings, but not enough to remember how to get where she wants to go. Are there training programs or help with schooling in the Central Illinois area for someone with her type of injury? I will be anxiously waiting for help from anyone in this area? Thank you in advance for any information you can pass on. Sincerely, Bonnie

I am the full time caregiver of a TBI survivor. He was in a motorcyccle accident 8-29-99. They said he would never live, but he did. His entire face was crushed from hitting a curb at 60 mph, they didn't repair it for five days. Then they said he would never wake up but he did 70 days later. His jaws were wired together his arms were frozen up and his feet were pulling down at the toes. They botoxed his arms and cast them over and over again they finally came down the left one first and he is right handedof course. he can now walk with very little help and refuses a wheelchair. they said he would never eat normally and gave him a g tube, now he eats everything he wants to. nowthey say he will never speak but he says he will and we believe him. We feel so blessed to have a son this strong and are so proud to be his parents. He had already been in the army for 4 years and spent 9 months in Bosnia. He is now 28 years old and is the sunshine of our life. Proud to be Jays Mom

Hi Joan,
Just giving some information to a client whose daughter is going home today. She was thrown from a four wheeler in November. She is not going home like she was when she got on that four wheeler and the family stated that nothing will be the same again. But they are all closer and they are all being strong. I printed all this and hope that she can get something from it.
Hope Eddie gets up to see Michelle in the next couple of days. Tell her I am sorry I couldn't make it.
Love, Sandy

I see lots of brain injury stories butthe injury is always as a result of an accident. Is there anyone else out there taking care of an anoxic brain injury from a heart attack? My husband was only 49 when it happened 2 years ago and I am his primary cargiver. We would not let him go to a nursing home. He has an aide during the day while I work but the money for that is running out. I'm praying and checking for possible solutions. We have been cared for and helped by many "angels" over the past two years so I am not afraid. But is there anyone else out there dealing with a similar situation?

!I began to read the letters written and it brought tears to my eyes, I has a traumatic brain injury when I was 6 years old , I am now 35, Reading all that I have I can only imagine what my mother and grandparents went through, I was in a coma for 6 months and the doctors told my mother that I would never walk again and be a vegetable as well... I remember waking up in the hospital with a board of needles in my arm about 12 inches...at that moment my mother went running for a nurse yelling "she's awake, she woke up".I was in a body cast for one year, I had to learn how to walk again....but there's one thing....my mother and grandparents, the entire family....prayed diligently, constant, never ceasing....they came to see me everyday in the hospital...especially my grandparents, they were there every single day from the time visiting hours started and ended...Nan and Pop....Oh how I love my grandparents....as much as my mom !!!! and when I came home......walking was a struggle to say the least but with the help of family I overcame the trial.....they continued to pray and still do.... because of their endless efforts and prayer and love, I have accomplished much ! swam for time trials in the Olympics, played basketball, football with my brothers, helped mentally challanged indivuals, sang and danced walked miles upon miles for my parents wouldn't allow me to own a car till I was 18 loll, graduated with honors for an prestigious college.....and now...I have gone through a divorce successfully, I have two BIG boys of my own, teen agers whom are extreem athletes.. What I want to tell you is, NEVER GIVE UP HOPE, PRAY RELENTLESSLY AND BELIEVE!! THE POWER OF PRAYER IS AMAZING!! I AM PROOF, BELIEVE!!BELIEVE!!NEVER STOP...There is something we all need to think about, I know the hurt and pain along with heart ache that is involved, i have felt and witnessed it ....but i firmly believe God will never give us more than we can handle.

I'm the caregiver of my now 23 year old son, Joe. He received his TBI Aug 1995 while a passenger in a vehicle which was hit by a drunk driver (no license) who ran a red light. Joe was 17 at the time. Two years ago Joe's anger got to the point that we could no longer care for him (we are older parents) and we had to put him in a rehab group home, where he continues to live. He is not happy there, although we feel they give him good care, he wants to be at home. His anger is better, but when at home he would refuse most of the time, to go to therapy just wanted to sit and watch tv. He also doesn't do as much for himself as he does at the home, and we are under constant stress when he's here. We're afraid to bring him home because we know he would do the same, and start to backslide. He does come home for weekends and Holidays. I carry guilt when we take him back since I know he wants to come home so badly, but know in my head, that where he is is the best thing for him. But sometimes hard to convince my heart! At least at the home he does go to the center for rehab 5 days a week and even though he is physically challanged, he is doing better than he was at home. But, still as a mom, the guilt lives on! Thank you for listening to me. Gloria

I found your link through one of our post's in the tbi chat room. My husbans was injured in an accidental overdose of heroin and cocaine. He was not my husband at the time, just a recent new boyfriend, though I knew nothing of his addiction then. I fell in love with him and 6 mo nths later this. I stayed by him, his months' in a nursing home, his rehabilitation and now his recovery, which is on going. I am always looking for information and support regarding the brain injured. Any new things I would appreciate. Thanks Joan

I was in a car accident in 1998. Still suffering from injuries. Was not given proper medical care at the time of accident. Within weeks after accident I returned to work and noticed that I lost all memory of the job that I had once trained the people I was working with. I took a few weeks off and started back for a few months. I noticed that I didn't know some people. Within in 6 months of the accident I started having small seizures and stopped working completely. I have been out of work since and have had trouble with seisures now even more than then. I get dizzy and ear ringing. Sometimes turn my head and black out. Still doctors say nothing else. Is there anyone else that can at least tell me that time will help and for me to stop pushing myself.

Brother, Ronny, injured on 7/7/01,MVA as a pedestrian, dragged over 90 ft. Driver not sited. No insurance. Age 40. Divorced. Father of 2 small children. They live with their mother. My brother is now in a nursing home. Mom would like to bring him home. She is needing help in adjusting the home...doors, ramps, bathroom facilities and with nursing care. She is the primary care giver. Has taken FMLA, has exhausted all personal days and vacation days. Step-father unemployed since April. He is needing a back surgery. Has post-poned it due to helping with my brother. I have been trying to locate information via internet. She doesn't have a computer. I live 325 miles away. Ronny now on Medicaid. Awaiting SSI/SSD. No savings or assets. Please advise of non-profit organizations that may assist in these areas. Medicaid has a program in AR to assist, but there are conflicts on how to go about applying. The local office doesn't know how to go about it. The state office says to go through the local office. Please, if anyone has been there...empower us with information and education so that his needs will be met. We also want rehabilitation for him. This is limited. He is getting some. Thanks ever so much!

We've started a support group in the Catawba Co. area and find that we have a very diversified group. However, there appears to be a great need for family and caregivers. We'd be interested in using you as a resource, however, we'd like to know more about you.

We are just out of our minds with questions. The problem is that we're not sure what questions to ask next. It seems as though the Drs. have given up on my brother before even rehabilitation has begun. He still has ear problems, dizziness, vomiting and has some trouble with his left eye(blurred or double vision). He is also a bit unstable on his feet and makes up these untrue stories. He knows who we are and even makes some sense. I know he's in there somewhwere, I'm just not sure how to get him back. I'm searching for help. We don't know what to do next. I think the insurance is giving the Drs. a hard time. It's been almost 2 months in the hospital. Help!

Hi, my name is Joshlyn, and I'm a caregiver to my step-son following a car accident he had in March of this year. He was in a coma for ten days. He stayed in the hospital for three months. At first he stayed with his mother, but he didn't like it there. so, he's been here for over a month now. This situation is so very stressful, he was lazy before the accident, but now it's worse. I don't know if it's part of the injury or what. you have got to constantly tell him to get up, brush his teeth, etc. the basic things. He wants to sleep constantly. And his eating habits are awful, he wants nothing but junk food. Is this common things that happen, I desperately need to know. My patience is wearing thin. The hospital has stopped his therapy for awhile, I dont' know if it's because of the money situation or because he's just not showing enough self help. He had no insurance, and the bills are unsurmountable. He was married, but not with his wife, but she is ultimatley responsible. I feel for her. She's been trying for months to get his dissability. Nothing so far. I've tried to get on chat lines, to talk to others in our situation, but couldn't find anything. Please help me. I am so desperate and mentally exhausted. The whole family is just getting disgusted. Any way you can help us, please do. Thank YOu, Joshlyn Turner

Our entire family lives have changed since my son's Steve accident 12/11/99. From his grandmother thru his youngest cousin, our lives have changed. The thing I find amazing is how little support and help is available for people with TBI. I feel lost alot of times, trying to do what I think is right for Steve. I plan to investigate this site more.

Our daughter had an AVM three weeks ago this past Tuesday, July 17. She is recovering miraculously and we are leaving Emmanuel Rehab in Portland tomorrow, Aug. 10th. She has sight difficulties which they hope will diminish, but may be correctable by surgery if necessary, was paralyzed on her left side but now only has slight weakness, and we are so thankful to God for his healing hands. Our daughter is 11 years old.

Have been a caregiver now for almost 5 years for my son Rob now 28 who had a MVA 11-18-96. Have been having a bad few weeks - just tired- I am a single parent- and have no help in his care but God has given me strength- I asked God to send me someone to talk to that would under- stand- I accidentially found this site. After reading several of the stories I just wanted to cry. Some of you have it worse than I and some have it better. I wish I could put my arms around all of you and give you a hug that I need myself very much. Like many of you I worry about tomorrow and what will happen to my son if something happens to me. Friends and family disappear as you probably know. No one really understands. I go to support group meetings but our group has speakers that come and not enough time to vent or share feelings. I feel I need to do something to get more services for TBI but then feel guilty about taking the time away from Rob. I like most of you am finanically strapped and have a hard time meeting ends. Have no life to speak of other than Rob's care ( try to do therapy with him and am trying to teach him to walk- He always wants to go somewhere but cannot understand the money part- He Has Short term memory loss and I repeat myself a lot. He is also on medication for seizures and spaciticity. But he has come along way back after eight months in hospital where I lived with him. Some day will write a book- He is my only child and is my life . Would like to hear from anyone who would like to just say I want to scream too, then smile and keep going. Thanks for the ear or eyes as the case may be. God Bless you all

I'm the spouse of a male closed head injury,he was injured on 12-27-98. When taken to the E.R. after being hit in the head with a steal door, he was unsure if he had L.O.C. and with out scalp damage was examined and released. Three days later, taken back to E.R. with what I thought might be seisure activity, finally a C.T.scan was done. This revealled a right occipital fracture, and again sent home! Since then I have fought to get him help at a local rehab. However when Labor and Industries closed his case all medical, emotional help ceased. I knew the moment that I saw him on the day he was injured, that "my husband of 16 years was gone." My husband was never able to cognitively, or emotionaly able to recover. I'm now married to a child who is constantly angry, violent, and suicidal. When he was first injured, I vowed to do what ever I could to enable him to be as independent, and balanced as possible. God help me I have failed him, and I'm failing my self as a result. I have no insurance, as I have lost my job for his needs. I have him on SSD and he gets medicare, but no ongoing psychological or perscription drug therapies. I used to tell him that there was hope, when he expressed wanting to die. Now I think I understand his inability to no who he was, and what he has become, and still want to live. I now find myself praying that he finds peace, because he hasn't known joy, since the day he died, and the monster took over. That is the only way I know to describe this new person in my life. My problem is that I fully realize that the only thing between his life now, and a cardboard sign in the street, are his meds, and me. How do you let go with out guilt, when do you no that you have done all that you can, and more than the patient ever wanted. Please help me, my family used to support my efforts, however with such a negative outcome, they now want me to leave him. He has no other family. How can I stay true to me and be strong for him?

I need help with knowing long-term effects of TBI as we just get a diagnosis for my husband. About 28 years after the injury, which is verifiable, took a lot of digging to get the information but I got it. My husband has been struggling with this for all of these years, trying to hide the symptoms, so that nobody would think that he crazy. Since his injury was so long ago there is not a lot of information out there on Long-Term Effects. I need help for the children & I to understand how to help him with this. He has been unable to work for 4 years. Thank you any information would be greatly appreciated.

Any information that anyone could give me concerning inpatient treatment facilities in Florida for TBI would be greatly apprec- iated. I have tried every where that I can think of and can find absolutely nothing. My husband needs to be admitted to one and even his doctors can't tell me of one by name, only that they know of one in Wauchula and one in Sarasota, but they can't give me a name or phone number or address. Please help if you can. Thank you.

Hi Ila, came by to visit your site! It's difficult for me to absorb how many folks receive head injuries. Makes me want to wear a "crash" helmet all the time. When I worked for a facility (mentally/physically challenged) in Virginia we had residents who were brain injured because of abuse. That's a heart breaker!
Hope your daughter continues to progress with the "new" treatment she will be receiving.

My daughter, Victoria was injured two years ago at camp, she suffered a TBI. I have given up my job (I worked for an airline) to take care of her. Eventhough her dad and I are still married, it's me who is her primary caregiver. I'm at all her doctor's appointments and she never misses cognitive. I don't resent her and never will, but there are days when I just want to stay in bed and cry, but I don't, its not me I feel bad for, but her. This website has such nice people who understand and give advice, and it does help. Some days I just need someone to listen, who maybe has the same thing going on in their lives, and can understand. Thank you for including my daughter and me. When she is older, I'm sure she'll participate in this website, hopefully she can help another mom or child through her experience in getting better.

This is a site I had not seen until today (May 28). I found it because of a prayer request that I asked Teri Belloti to pass along. I immediately heard from Iia and checked out the site. I have searched out TBI sites for years and could not believe I had missed one. It is a wonderful site and I'm sure many people have been helped by it, as I have. Thanks to you all.

I had to fight back tears as I read so many heart touching stories. It seems most doctors and nurses take the same class in "Stupid comments to make to the family of a TBI patient!" I had my accident on April 26, 1995. It seems like decades ago. I was in a coma for a week and began "responding to commands," according to my medical report, shortly after I was "awake." (Gee, they made me sound like a circus animal.) Many of my actions were labeled as reflexes, but my family and fiance' did not listen to the doctors and allowed themsleves to heal a bit more as I healed. Every wink of my eye or puckering of my lips was taken as a form of communication. My memories of the trauma unit do not exist, thank God. I remember the rehabilitation unit in Houston quite a bit. I was well taken care of, but as soon as I decided to not attend an outpatient program the hostpital sponsored for head injury patients, I was forgotten. Forget that I was not expected to do much when and if I recovered. Forget that I married the man my doctor said would probably leave me. "50% of couples break up when a one partner is head injured, you know." I beat the odds. They said I may never walk....I walked out of the hospital with a walker and leg brace and I walked a mile last week at the gym without a cane or brace. They said I would probably never drive again, I bought a new car last month. They said it was an unrealistic goal that I would ever return to college and succeed. I graduate with my B.A. in 2002. I had an initial Glascow of 6 and a shunt in my head and all the other goodies that indicate possible life time need for help. I own a home, I cook. I bathe and grrom myself,I take care of my dog, I even drive to th egrocery store and shop alone. I have a wonderful and caring husband who stuck by me before we even took the vow of "til death do us part." I do many things they said I would never do. I still get pretty bad headaches and my eye sight is poor. My feet get a little numb when I walk too much and I still need to slow down sometimes and rest. I have moved mountains and intend to continue. I am currently volunteering with the Idaho Brain Injury Association Chapter. I may do my senior internship with them and look forward to meeting other survivors. What a fabulous site this is and I hope many people find it and find just what they are looking for.

My son Mark was struck by a car on September 30th 2000, and as a result suffered massive brain injury. He has had partial frontal lobe lobe removal, partial parietal lobe, and temporal lobe removal.I was also told that the rest of he's brain was so badly bruised that the doctor's didn't hold to much hope for my son. After the 9th day of Mark's accident the doctor's told us of the results of he's brain scan. They did not look good. Mark would not Know us, have no memory of anything or anyone, would not be able to walk, talk, or control he's bodily functions, the best we could hope for is that Mark would possibly be able to only feed himself. So Mark was taken out of the drug induced coma. Five day's later Mark sat up in he's bed and askedwhere I had been. He has been home with me since the end of January. Because of he's brain injury he could not cope with being hospitalized. It is a hard struggle sometimes being a single parent and working full time. At times I feel like giving up but something keeps me going. Maybe it's the pleasent times with my son that get's me through the hard times that we sometimes have. By the way my son is able to walk, and remember, and altough sometimes he can not say some words he has no trouble describing what he want's to say. I have two other sons and a good family and when I need to have a cry I talk to one of them. I have worked with head injury patients for 16 year's as a Physical therapist but nothing had prepared me for this. I live in Australia in a small country town and have a wonderfull rehab centre that I work in and Mark can come with me. Thankyou for this page.

My name is Demetra Caldwell. I am 27 yrs old and is married to a Closed brain injured spouse. His accident happened on April 14, 2001. I don't know what to do. My husband doesn't have any insurance and I'm trying to get him on Medicaid. The hospital discharge planning team is consulting with me about his after care. I don't know what to do. They said that its a problem with the assistant funds. I know that once he gets on medicaid then I can put him in a rehab center. I can't take him home because I have to work to keep the bills paid. I don't know what to do. This is the first time I ever dealt with someone with a brain injury. If you have any suggestions and comments please feel free to contact me at my e-mail address. I need help and don't know where to begin. Thank you for taking the time out to read this comment. P.S. I live in Tallahassee, Fla.

I am the mother of a now 8 year-old (BI 1/99). It has drastically changed our lives; we now structure our lives around him. We also have a 16 year old daughter very active in school activities; needless to say, our social life is almost non-exisistent! We have all come a long way, but still have a long way to go

I have been looking for a caregiver support group for twenty years. I am so glad to have met Paulette Keeney in Austin while we were both there to support HB1676. If she hadn't left the cards with the ribbons I never would have known about this organization. Thank you.
