Paulette Keeney
We are Paulette and Nathan Keeney from Houston, Texas. Nathan sustained a severe BI in an auto accident June 19, 1998. He was 17 years old. He was taken by life flight to a local trauma center in a coma with a Glasgow score of 4. He also had many internal injuries as well as a severely fractured pelvis. They didn't expect him to live.
Nathan wasn't breathing on his own, they placed him on a ventilator and rushed him to surgery to stop the internal bleeding. The next few weeks were so scary!! At one point he was improving and then the next day his ICP's were in the 60's, which caused additional damage. They told us that if Nathan lived he would remain in PVS.
Nathan was in the hospital for 115 days. He was evaluated several time for possible rehabilitation services but was unresponsive. He needed a coma stimulation program but was a Medicaid patient, as he had no insurance at the time of the accident, and they don't pay for those kind of programs. We choose to bring him home upon his release, as opposed to putting him in a nursing home as the hospital recommended. He has made progress ever since. While he still requires total care, he is very alert and understands everything that is said. He is happy and a real joy to be with!
Fighting for the services he needs has been a real nightmare. I hope that by joining with the Recovery Awareness Foundation I can help change this. I look forward to meeting and working with you all!
